Framed Cupid and Psyche

Description : Framed print by Maddy Bean, based on the painting by Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée 1767. This painting, while very Western in its depiction of this mythology, radiates a love and gentleness that I wanted to keep while still changing out the figures to show a different lens. I traded the traditionally male Cupid with a winged woman of color, creating both a sapphic and more diverse viewing of this famous couple. The two women also brandish scars and muscles and rolls, showcasing different kinds of human and body features in these mythological manifestations of desire and want. Finally, I changed the colors of the cloth that adorn the lovers to mimic those of the lesbian flag because I thought they would be pretty, and tie the piece together! I just think it is important to see women in love, in more spaces.
