Consignment for Authors

Interested in getting your books on our shelves?
We are too!

Check our consignment program details below to make sure it's the right fit for you then submit the quick form linked at the end of this page. We're excited to check out your book!

A Bit About Us

  • We’re a comfy and cozy space - imagine a maximalist queer living room full of soft imagery and well-loved queer stories. We're a small bookstore tucked inside the cute gift shop, gallery space, and tattoo studio that is Sonny's House. If you haven’t yet, come visit us in person!
  • We prioritize local authors but do consign with authors and small presses all over the US!
  • For the sake of this application we’re defining books as bound manuscripts with a titled spine. If you believe your work is more of a zine please check out our Artist and Zinester application.
  • While we do carry returnable wholesale books from publishers and distributors like Ingram, we’re much more likely to take on your books (and more copies of your books) via consignment
  • We payout consignors monthly, 70% to you and 30% to us via cash, check, Venmo, and Paypal. Payout amounts under $10 will be held until the next month, unless it is an author's last month in which case no amount will be withheld.
  • A non-refundable $15 setup fee is required for authors and presses who are new to us and each contract is 6 months long.
  • We support the creativity and hard work of authors and artists and will not accept any AI-generated writing or cover art.
  • We only carry queer-centered stories with a wide range of rep, and tend to gravitate towards speculative fiction with happy endings (no burying our gays here!) Because we’re also a tattoo studio, our audience tends to be adults who are looking for adult and YA stories.
  • We're also able to host author events at Honeyed Words - let us know if you're interested! 2hr events are scheduled 6-8 weeks in advance and are promoted via our marketing channels. Consignment author events cost $60 and will be due upon event confirmation.

Submission

  • The submission application will ask you for all the items typically found on a book one sheet. If you already have a one sheet you are welcome to upload it as a .pdf in the submission form.
  • Please note while an ARC is not required for submission or acceptance, having read your book greatly increases our ability to handsell it! If you’re interested in sending us an ARC, the electronic book(s) or first few chapters can be uploaded in the application form or emailed to honeyedwordspdx@gmail.com and physical ARCs can be sent to:

Honeyed Words
2504 NE Sandy Blvd
Portland OR 97232

Timeline

  • We’ve got a lot going on and tend to respond to authors whose work we’re interested in within 4 weeks. In the case that your book isn’t the right fit for Honeyed Words at this time, on the submission form you’ll have the option to opt for no response, a generic but kind denial email, or a kind denial email with feedback - we want to help get your book in stores even if ours isn’t the perfect fit!
  • If we take on your book(s) we’ll ask you to fill out the consignment contract, product list spreadsheet, and submit the $15 set up fee.
  • After that we’ll accept your books and usually take about 2 weeks to process, add price stickers if needed, and display in-store! We’ll also invite you to join our consignment system where you can see when things have sold, as well as share a link to your books in our online shop to share with your audience!
  • At the end of the 6 month period we’ll let you know that the contract is ending if any books are remaining, and you’ll have two months to pick-up or pay for shipping of your books back to you. Any books left uncollected after 60 days will be donated to our local county libraries and neighborhood free little libraries.
